Published yesterday, September 9, on the MASAF website, the decree introduces the minimum conservation size for red shrimp and purple shrimp, set at 25 mm carapace length. The measure comes into force today (the day following publication) and is posted on the notice boards of the Harbor Master’s Offices.

The decree implements GFCM Recommendations 46/2023/2-3-4 and applies to GSAs 12–16 (Strait of Sicily), 19–21 (Ionian Sea), and 24–27 (Levantine Sea), for the species red shrimp (ARS) and purple shrimp (ARA).

The text states that for undersized specimens, catching, retaining on board, transshipping, transferring, landing, storing, selling, and displaying by professional fishing operators are prohibited. The minimum conservation size for red and purple shrimp is therefore fixed at 25 mm CL across the entire chain of responsibility of professional operators.

The measure recalls EU legislation on conservation and control and refers to the ministerial decrees of April 20, 2025, listing the vessels authorized to target ARS/ARA fisheries in the relevant GSAs. The adoption is formalized in decree no. 0431635 of 09/09/2025, digitally signed by Director General Francesco Saverio Abate and Officer Roberto Nepomuceno.
