With the birth of Jisr Almutawasit Company, the Italo-Libyan joint fishing venture takes on the contours of a strategic project that goes beyond simple industrial cooperation. The joint venture was established through a presidential decree of the Libyan Government of National Unity and was officially presented with the support of Ambassador Gianluca Alberini and Dr. Fabio Giudice, head of the Economic Office, alongside Nicola Giacalone, owner of Medina Srl in Mazara del Vallo.
The project, which has been welcomed and praised by the Libyan Minister of Fisheries, stems from the collaboration between Medina and Al Robyan Fishing Company of Misurata. The agreement marks a turning point in Mediterranean cooperation, connecting an Italian company with established international experience and a Libyan partner eager to align its fishing sector with global standards.
The new company will not be limited to commercial fishing. A broad research and development program is planned, with the transfer to Libya of the most advanced technologies owned by Medina, holder of the Rosso di Mazara brand. Among the innovations are the recovery of crustacean waste for the production of chitosan, a key substance in the biomedical field, and the extraction of hyaluronic acid from tuna eyes, a valuable component for cosmetics and medicine.
In this area, the Italo-Libyan joint fishing venture can make a tangible impact: reducing waste, increasing traceability, and generating new upstream and downstream production chains. This path may have effects not only on fish markets but also in collateral sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. A perspective that gives the Mediterranean a central role as a shared space of innovation and sustainable development.
